It's been weeks since Thanksgiving and Christmas is coming soon. It means moms all around the world will be busy. It's time to gather with family and closest friends. Having festive dishes and enjoy them as family unit or friendship gathering at brunch or dinner time.
Last Thanksgiving, my hubby literary begging me to make mashed potato and roast turkey. On 2009, I prepared those dishes on Christmas instead of Thanksgiving. We manage to invite friends last time to enjoy the foods. We always had Thanksgiving gathering with people from work in years so I hardly cook turkey. Starting 2010, the customs seems changing as there were mass rotary within the organization. New people, new customs. Hubby decide to celebrate privately this year and there you go, the new family custom had born = I'll be cooking on Thanksgiving day, dang! ha ha ha ,,,
Hubby particularly asked for something 'rustic' on mashed potato dish, "Something like my grand ma used to make". All I respond was "Mama mia!", honestly I was worry as I'm used to creative with dishes. I used to adding this and that and will end up as twisted one. They basically screaming 'Made by Titut with LOVE'. I guess this time I should hold myself a little bit in order to make the king of the house, one happy man.

I never celebrate Thanksgiving before I met my hubby. Indonesian has no such custom though every tribes have their own way to say thank you. Javanese, i.e. held 'selamatan' in Bahasa or 'wilujengan' in Javanese. Yes, most Indonesian able to speak their own tribe language and our national languange, Bahasa Indonesia. On selamatan, we make nasi tumpeng, the yellow rice tumpeng made as mountain shaped and served with some assorted Indonesian dishes surround it, i.e : ayam ungkep (ungkep chicken), urap (steamed veggies with seasoned grated young coconut), perkedel (deep fried mashed potatoes), sambel goreng krecek (water buffalo fried skin, green pees, seasoned with coconut milk and chili paste) and kering tempe (seasoning fermented soy beans and slices chilies). You can't figure it out how it looks like? Google it or you are welcome to see it on my Nomads Cooking Recipe blog in the future.
I made simple mashed potatoes on last Thanksgiving. I only add some (low fat) milk, (unsalted) butter, little bit sour cream and saute' garlic and onion. I didn't forget to add every one secret ingredients salt and pepper and mine lots lots of LOVE. My worry of the day was mashed potatoes indeed, other than that I think they made well.
We end up having our Thanksgiving festive dishes for dinner and the menu as followed: 1. Roast Turkey breast 2. 'Rustic' mashed potato with mushroom gravy 3. Steamed asparagus 4. Baked carrots with onion 5. Salad 6. Some our favorite snacks, black olive (mine), asinan nenas tabur kacang (Indonesian sweet and sour pineapple pickle with roasted peanuts - mine) and pickled artichoke (hubby).
2010 Thanksgiving run smoothly. I (must) let my hubby carving the turkey or else he will give me the "look" and "scream" like he gave me last 2009 Christmas when I was about carving the roast beef I cook. Apparently carving roasted turkey, beef or pork is man thing in American culture. I guess it's becoming our custom as well. I'm, the wife who is cooking and then he is the one who is honored to carving the roast. I don't mind, as matter of fact that's kind of cute. I never see any man that serious on food before, till last Christmas 2009 ha ha ha,,,

Hubby was able to have 3 plates of foods on that day and left offer were finished within 2 days. We had festive brunch, lunch and dinner indeed. "Thank you God for the food I'm about to eat. May people all around the world lucky enough to feel your kindness in many ways, amen", I kept saying those over and over again every time I ate those left offer. I thanking God for His blessing and may we all able to celebrate Thanksgiving again next year. Happy 'late' Thanksgiving people. Love' Titut and hubby.
